How to Build a Minimal Skincare Routine

Most people who are unhappy with their skincare routine do not need more products. They need fewer products, used consistently, in the right order.

The three that do the work

A cleanser, a moisturizer and a sunscreen. That is a complete routine. Everything else is optimisation.

Cleanser. Match it to how your skin feels, not to how dirty you think your face is. Tight after washing means the cleanser is too strong. A gel suits most people; a foam suits drier skin.

Moisturizer. One product, twice a day. Rich cream for dry to normal skin, gel-cream for combination to oily. The texture matters more than the ingredient list here — you will skip a moisturizer you do not enjoy applying.

Sunscreen. This is the one with the most evidence behind it and the one most often skipped. Daily, every morning, regardless of weather. If you only change one thing this year, change this.

Adding a fourth

Once those three are automatic — and give it a month — add one treatment serum. One. Pick it based on what you actually want to change:

  • Dehydration → hyaluronic acid
  • Dullness and uneven tone → vitamin C, in the morning
  • Texture and fine lines → retinol, in the evening
  • Pores and shine → niacinamide
  • Blemishes → a targeted blemish serum

Why one at a time

If you add three products at once and your skin reacts, you have no way of knowing which one caused it. Introduce one, give it four to six weeks, then decide. Skincare operates on the timescale of skin cell turnover, not on the timescale of impatience.

What to leave out

Toners, essences and seven-step routines are not wrong, they are just optional. If you enjoy them, keep them. If you are building a routine you will actually follow on a Tuesday night when you are tired, keep it to four steps.
